About ICKIM

RATIONALE FOR THE CONFERENCE

The reality today is that in order to survive, institutions, businesses, SMEs, NGOs as well as public and private organizations must embrace sustainable development. As noted in the new sustainable development agenda, the achievement of a strong, inclusive and lasting economic growth and success must be based on the three factors of Triple Bottom Line (TBL) – economic, social and environmental. Achieving the goal of the development agenda (which has commonly been described as broad, ambitious and challenging) will need attention on knowledge, innovation and their management.

Organizational culture needs to be one that supports idea generation and creativity, provides resources and opportunities that will encourage individual and group creating. Knowledge is critical for good decision making and for prioritization and efficient use of resources while innovation provides new solutions to old problems. The effective exploration, exploitation and retention of knowledge have now become priority in a world that is continually inundated with new knowledge and where organizations’ prior knowledge is constantly undermined.

So much untapped knowledge beneficial for sustainable development exists in the world that never sees the light of day; so much tacit knowledge is wasting away in businesses, institutions, governments, SMEs, NGOs, public and private organizations as well as in industries and in communities.

The 2030 agenda challenges these entities to encourage a culture of knowledge management and innovation practices and processes; a culture that stimulates change, organizational learning and trust, in which members are being motivated to create and to share knowledge in constructive ways.

Many organizations are already managing knowledge and innovation successfully. Others are doing so informally and most likely inadequately or in non-compelling ways. Others have not factored in the sustainable development angle. By formally establishing and implementing knowledge management and innovation strategies and practices, organizations will be able to find solutions to the challenges of sustainability, promote the global sustainable development agenda and in the process, create lasting competitive advantage for themselves, maintain technical expertise and ensure access to vital information.

OBJECTIVES OF THE CONFERENCE

The conference aims to bring together academic and research scholars as well as educators and practitioners to explain and share their experiences and research findings on all aspects of knowledge management and innovation for sustainable development.
It also provides a forum for participants to present and discuss trends, concerns, practical challenges and solutions arrived at in their practice of knowledge management and innovation for the growth and development of their organizations/societies.
